Awol Erizku: Exploring Afro-esotericism

Awol Erizku is a multidisciplinary artist working in photography, film and sculpture, who has made a mark on the art world map in a series of exhibitions challenging historical Western narratives while building his own unique Afrocentric aesthetic.

Born in Ethiopia and raised in the Bronx neighborhood of New York, Awol earned an MFA at the Yale School of Art. Awol's distinctive visual language emerges from thoughtful, contemplative underpinnings into layered, colorful, and striking images. He is also the photographer behind famous and powerful portraits of cultural and creative leaders, including Beyoncé’s iconic pregnancy reveal.


As one of the most acclaimed artists of his generation, Awol's work has been exhibited at a number of galleries around the world, such as New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Brussels and Toronto.
