Bridging Gaps in Health Care

Kaaro Health, co-founded by Angella Kyomugisha, is a Ugandan social enterprise dedicated to increasing healthcare access in Africa’s remote areas. In Uganda, while more than 80% of the population resides outside urban areas, nearly 75% of all private health facilities are concentrated in a few towns and cities, serving less than 10% of the patient population. To bridge this critical healthcare gap, Kaaro Health deploys telehealth-enabled container clinics in underserved villages, bringing essential medical care closer to those who need it most. These clinics, staffed by local nurses and lab technicians, provide primary healthcare services, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for treatment.

Since its establishment in 2017, Kaaro Health has achieved significant milestones. The organization operates 76 container clinics, each averaging 22 daily walk-in visits, with five to seven consultations requiring a doctor’s expertise. This model ensures that quality primary healthcare is accessible within a one-kilometer radius for many rural Africans. Additionally, Kaaro Health has grown into a financially sustainable enterprise, generating over USD $800,000 in revenue while maintaining its mission to provide affordable healthcare to the underserved.

Kaaro Health’s innovative approach has earned international recognition, with Angella Kyomugisha named a 2023 Cartier Women’s Initiative Fellow and a recipient of the Bayer Foundation’s Women Empowerment Award. These honors highlight her leadership in healthcare innovation and commitment to improving rural healthcare accessibility. With its scalable model and continued growth, Kaaro Health is setting a precedent for sustainable, tech-driven healthcare solutions across the continent.
